 CD - Ceske Drahy

Network length, gauge and electrification (2021):

In the beginning of 2003 former CD was split up in the new CD, only responsible for management and operation of rail transport. The infrastructure is now in the hands of SZDC, Sprava Zeleznicni dopravni cesty (renamed into SZ - Sprava Zeleznic - in 2019). On 1 December 2007 CD Cargo was split off from the operating company CD.

In 2018 the last narrow gauge CD line Tremesna-Osoblaha (22km, 760mm gauge) was taken over by Sleszke zemske drahy (SZD). CD will keep on operating the daily passenger service, but summer weekend steam services on the line will be operated by SZD.

In 2023 CD carried 164.4 million passengers (+7.3%), producing 8.09 billion passenger-km (7.71 billion in 2022). CD Cargo carried 53.9 million tonnes of freight, 15% less than in 2022.

In December 2012 Arriva vlaky, subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn from Germany, started an open-access passenger service on Kralupy nad Vltavou–Praha Masarykovo–Benešov using second-hand German diesel trainsets.
At the end of 2018 Arriva has won a three-year contract covering R21 Praha – Tanvald, R22 Kolín – Nový Bor, R24 Praha – Rakovník and R26 Praha – České Budĕjovice from December 2019. Also regional trains in the Zlin region have been taken over from CD. In Northern Bohemia they operate L3 Liberec-Lomnice nad Popolkou and L21 Zelezny Brod-Tanvald. More second-hand German diesel trainsets (class 628 and 642) are used.
Since December 2020 Arriva operates inter-regional fast services on lines R14A and R14B from Liberec to Pardubice and Usti nad Labem, with 15 modernised class 845 (former DB class 628) diesel trainsets. The contract length is 7 years.

Since December 2022 Arriva operates passenger trains on L3 Libered-Stara Paka-Jaromer with Desiro DMU's. Stara Paka-Lomnice is now once again operated by CD.

From December 2024 (for 9 years) Arriva will operate passenger trains in Jihomoravsky kraj (South Moravia): S 8 Breclav-Znojmo(-Satov), S 52 Zajeci-Hodonin and S 91 Hodonin-Veseli-Vrbovce. 13 new low-floor DMUs will be used on these services.

In 2016 116,000 passengers travelled with Arriva.
In October 2023 Arriva was sold by DB to USA investment company I Squared.

AZD Praha is well known as a supplier for railway systems. For testing these they bought the Lovosice-Most railway line. Since December 2019 this line also sees regular passenger service, continuing from Lovosice to Litomerice.

 DLBCZ - Die Länderbahn CZ

Network length, gauge and electrification (2020):

Since December 2019 Die Länderbahn from Germany (former Regentalbahn) operates local passenger trains on lines U12 (Osek-Most-Louny-Rakovnik), U14 (Jirkov-Chomutov-Zatec-Luzna u Rakovnika) and touristic service T7 (Chomutov-Krimov-Medenec-Vejprty). For these services - to be operated for 10 years - "Regiosprinter" DMUs formerly operated by Vogtlandbahn are used.

In December 2021 DLB started operating trains on L4 Rumburk-Mlada Boleslav for 10 years, to be followed by L2 Liberec-Decin from December 2022.

 GWTR - GW Train Regio (former Viamont Regio)

Network length, gauge and electrification (2010):

Viamont once was a large company operates passenger trains on Sokolov-Kraslice and Trutnov-Svoboda nad Upou, and heavy freigh trains over many CD lines. Viamont carried in 2006 the total of 966 965 tonnes of coal, in total 1.4 million tonnes of freight. In 2004 1.04 million passengers travelled with Viamont.
Since January 2006 Viamont also operates passenger trains on Karlovy Vary-Marianske Lazne, with Desiro DMUs leased from Vogtlandbahn in Germany. In December 2006 the line was completely taken over from CD.
In Summer 2008 Viamont Cargo was acquired by its competitor OKDD. In 2010 Viamont took over passenger operation on Milotice nad Opavou to Vrbno pod Pradedem from OKDD.

At the end of 2011 Viamont Regio (the remaining passenger business) was acquired by IDS Holding and subsequently renamed into GW Train Regio. In the mean time GWTR has been taken over by bus operator CSAD Jihotrans.

Since December 2016 GWTR operates passenger trains on Plzen-Most (157km). GTWR also won the tender for operation in Southern Bohemia, on Ceske Budejovice-Cerny Kriz, Strakonice-Volary and Cicenice-Volary-Nove Udoli, but it now seems that CD will keep on operating these lines.

Since December 2023 GWTR operates all passenger trains on Horazdovice predmesti-Susice-Klatovy (99km) with a few trains over connecting lines to Strakonice, Nepomuk and Domazlice (P11/P23).

Since December 2021 Trutnov-Svoboda is no longer operated by GWTR but by CD.

Network length, gauge and electrification (2014):

IDS is an open-access company and mainly operates railway infrastructure trains. Their locomotives and shunters can also be hired. The company is based in Olomouc.
In 2019 the parent company of IDS acquired KDS (Kladenska Dopravni a Strojni), a locomotive repair and lease company. The KDS locomotives and shunters were added to the IDS stock.

 JHMD - Jindrichohradecke Mistni Drahy

Network length, gauge and electrification (2016):

Since 1997 this company operates all trains on the narrow gauge lines around Jindrichuv Hradec: Jindrichuv Hradec-Obratan and Jindrichuv Hradec-Nova Bystrice. They own several steam locomotives of which a few were recently restored or are under overhaul. Also the two standard gauge historic standard gauge motor cars they own (class 830/831) are not in operational condition.

In September 2022 railway operation was halted due to lack of money for maintenance of the locomotives and railcars, and of the infrastructure.

KPT Rail started as Klub přátel Transverzálky, z.s. They operate seasonal passenger trains on Netolice-Divcice-Cicenice-Tyn nad Vltavou (branch line Cicenice-Tyn nad Vltavou 21.3km, multiple train pairs) and open-access freight and special trains. The company is based in Tabor.

 KZC - KZC Doprava

Network length, gauge and electrification (2016):

KZC Doprava is the public transport operating arm of historical club and tourist train operator KZC. With second-hand diesel railbusses they operate a public passenger service on Praha Masarykovo-Praha Cakovice (19km) since 2013. In April 2018 S24 Celakovice-Mochov (4km) followed.

Network length, gauge and electrification (2012):

In December 2012 LEO Express has started a new express passenger service between Praha and Bohumin with new FLIRT trainsets from Stadler. They have plans for many more new open-access passenger services, for which new Chinese trainsets have been ordered. Since 2018 Praha-Krakow(PL) is operated.

The Pardubice region has selected Leo Express to run subsidised services on the 024 Ústí nad Orlicí–Moravský Karlov(-Mlýnický Dvůr) and 025 Dolní Lipka – Hanušovice routes until 12/2019 operated by ČD.
Leo Express’s first subsidised public service contract runs for 10 years since December 2019. Diesel trainsets and motor cars have been taken over from Vectus in Germany for this service, many of them have been hired to Arriva.

RENFE, the Spanish national railway operator, has announced plans to acquire 50% of LEO Express.

In 2018 1.3 million passengers travelled with LEO, 100,000 more than in 2017.

METRANS Rail was founded as Railtransport in 2003 and is based in Sokolov. It operates regional trains, charter trains and freight. The plan to start open-access express passenger trains (planned for 2007) did not materialize. METRANS increased its stake in the company to 80% in 2011, becoming the owner of Railtransport.

Metrans itself is now owned by Hamburger Hafen & Logistik. In 2024 Metrans took over Adria Rail, active in Serbia and Croatia (note: not Adria Transport from Slovenia which is a subsidiary of GKB from Austria).

Apart from a large network of industrial railways, OKDD had taken over the line from Milotice nad Opavou to Vrbno pod Pradedem from CD. In Summer 2008 OKDD acquired Viamont Cargo, in 2010 Viamont took over the passenger operations of OKDD. On the 1st of May 2010 OKDD was renamed into Advanced World Transport. Early 2015 AWT was sold to Polish Railways freight operator PKP Cargo. At the end of 2019 AWT was actually renamed into PKP Cargo International.

In 2014 AWT transported over 12 million tonnes of freight, producing 1.6 billion tonne-km.

RC exists since 2011 and was set up to operate passenger trains on branch lines. In 2016 the company mainly operates seasonal weekend trains on such lines, for which second-hand railbusses were bought. RC's locomotives are often hired to track maintenance firms.

 RJ - RegioJet a.s. (Student Agency)

Network length, gauge and electrification (2011):

RegioJet is a subsidiary created by Student Agency for operating open access passenger trains. For long-distance trains in the Czech Republic (that started in 2011) Skoda locomotives have been acquired second-hand from FNM in Italy. For services in Slovakia from 12/2011 second-hand Talent diesel trainsets from Bombardier were acquired. About half of these were exchanged for Desiro trainsets from Siemens.
For international services operating on both 3000V DC and 25kV AC lines, fast and powerful electric locomotives type Vectron from Siemens are being leased.

In 2018 RegioJet won the contract to operate regional services on six lines around Usti nad Labem in the 2019-2029 period (U1(1 pair)/U3(3 pairs)/U5/U7/U13/U16(some) and U32(1 pair)). For these trains former DB class 628 are used, but new trainsets Elf II have been ordered from PESA in Poland.
At the end of 2018 RegioJet also won an eight-year contract to run long-distance service R8 from Brno to Ostrava and Bohumín from December 2019.

Since December 2021 RJ operates express passenger trains on Kolin-Usti nad Labem zapad (135km) for 8 years. From December 2026 RegioJet will operate R9 Praha-Havlickuv Brod-Brno high-speed services with new trainsets from PESA (for 15 years). Also from December 2026 (for 15 years) RegioJet will operate local services in the Ustecky region, services on U1/U2/U3/U32/U51/U54 around Usti nad Labem.

In 2018 9.7 million passengers travelled with RegioJet, 29% more than in 2017. 5.9 million passengers travellen on long-distance trains.
