Network length, gauge and electrification (2019):

Although not part of the EU (yet), Croatia decided to split the national company in 4 divisions, for maintenance and construction of railways (HZ Infrastruktura), for passenger trains (HZ Putnicki prijevoz), for freight trains (HZ Cargo), and a division for motive power (HZ Vuca vlakova). The division took place on 1 January 2007.
In 2002 passenger numbers fell by 8% to 16.1 million passengers. Freight traffic grew by 6.3% to 2.2 million tonnes.

In 2014 HZ Cargo transported 9.9 million tonnes of freight, 0.5 million tonnes less than in 2014.

In December 2012 and January 2013 the last 3000V= electrified lines around Rijeka were converted to 25kV. The remaining DC locomotives were stored.

Enna Transport also used to operate as PPD Transport. It is an open-access freight operator that exists since 2012 but has started leasing its own locomotives in 2016. The company is based in Zagreb. ENNA Transport is part of Enna Energia Naturalis.

 RCCC - Rail Cargo Carrier Croatia

On 31 March 2015 RCCC started its commercial operations. RCCC is the subsidiary of Rail Cargo Austria operating in Croatia. The first locomotives are 3 second-hand electric shunters/freight locomotives in Austria, operating from Zagreb.

Rail&Sea AG has its main headquarters in Austria, but mainly operates open access freight trains in Croatia.

 TRARI - Transagent Spedicija

Network length, gauge and electrification (2018):

In 2018 this new open-access freight operator started hauling coal trains from the ports of Rijeka and Bakar to Gyékényes in Hungary. Its locomotives are owned by Lokotech from Russia, that bought them from DB Cargo Romania.
