Network length, gauge and electrification (2009):

• 1324km broad gauge(1520mm), all electrified at 3000V=
• 37km narrow gauge(912mm), all electrified at 1500V=

The Georgian Railway is serving the two very important Black Sea ports, Poti and Batumi. There is a rail connection to Russia. Some of the lines are in very difficult terrain, so they are heavily graded with narrow curves.
In 1999 GR produced 355 million passenger-km and 9492 million tonne-km of freight. The number of electric locomotives was 218, and 175 diesels.
