The JŽ (Yugoslavian Railways) series 361 locomotives (FS /Italian Railways/ series E 626) were being manufactured by more companies in Italy, totally amounting 448 units. They were designed for hauling freight and passengers' trains both on lowland and mountain rails. After the truce with Italy was reached on 1947/02/10, in December 1948 and January 1949, sixteen electric units of the E 626 series were taken over in Divača (Slovenia). In 1957, these first engines were assigned the serial number E 61, and on 1962/05/04, they became the JŽ 361 series (the 300 series powered at 3 kV =, thus making distinction to newly introduced 400 series for the 25 kV ~ 50 Hz current system). 16 units of the series were assigned to Railway Direction of Ljubljana - ŽG Ljubljana (Slovenia), and only one locomotive, namely 361 107, popularly called »Marijan«, to the Railway Direction of Zagreb - ŽTP Zagreb. From 1976/12/01 began cashing of the 361 series, starting with the units 361 002, 361 101, 361 003, 361 103 and 361 008, which were successively withdrawn from the traffic with the end date of 1983/01/17, when the last two units 361 106 and 361 006 were cashed.

The engine numbered 361 001 is now exhibited at Moste Railway Works Moste in Ljubljana, and no. 361 102 at Railway Education Center Šiška in Ljubljana. The electric locomotive no. 361 201 has been situated at Locomotive Overhaul Department in Vukomerec (Zagreb) since 1982/11/12. In 1992. the locomotive was removed to Railway Museum in Zagreb. It is interesting that only Croatian locomotive was scrapped away, and in Zagreb is one Slovenian unit. Locomotive is still today in very poor condition, but all the parts are still on the loco. Generally only 3 units of ex-JŽ survived - 2 in Slovenia and one in Croatia. One unit is stored as a monument at Ljubljana Moste (central depot of Slovenian railways), one is in poor condition also at Moste, and one is in Zagreb.

***According to new HŽ numbering scheme 361 locomotive is 1061 (but, 1061 in HŽ was 362 in JŽ!) - 1 = electro locomotive; 0 = 3000V=; 6 - driven axles and 1 - first series

****At the first time (from 1948 - 1957 JŽ used FS numbering system. After 1957 number E 61 was used, and after 4th may 1962 when JŽ decided to use two electrification systems on the network; they want to denotate difference between 3000V= and 25kV 50Hz on locomotive number. After that number 3 is for 3000V= and 4 for 25kV 50 Hz. In the old class number E means Električna lokomotiva (electric locomotive). For details see numbering section.
