Yugoslav Railways purchased in 1960 a new
series of diesel-electric locomotives manufactured by General Motors Company of
USA, with the original mark EMD G16.
In 1963, the first reconstruction of the
original monoblocks took place on the unit 661-017 (the present 2061-026) of
Knin Railway Depot. The wheels were modified to apply the bandages.
