1061

In
the mid 50s, the Yugoslavian Railways had 17 old electric locomotives (16 in
Ljubljana and 1 in Zagreb) obtained from Italy as a war reparation (all of them
were from the 361 FS E626 series), and a newly acquired 341 locomotive of French
production (in Zagreb). At the time, the Zagreb - Rijeka line was being
electrified with the 3000V= current, and the need for new locomotives arose. In
the late 50s, the JŽ decides to buy Italian locomotives from ANSALDO company.
Locomotive
1061 is a 6-axle articulated locomotive from ANSALDO factory from Genova. The JŽ
bought 50 locomotives of this type in the early 60s. Although the case of the
locomotive is identical to the one of the Italian locomotive E636, locomotive
1061 is actually developed from a newer type - the Italian locomotive 646. The
foreseries of locomotives E646 had a case identical to locomotive 636, and
locomotive 1061, especially designed for the JŽ, was developed from the
foreseries of locomotive 646.
Locomotives 1061 were delivered between 1960 and 1964 (numbers 001 to 019) and between 1968 and 1969 (numbers 101 to 110). Some improvements were introduced for the subseries 1 as a result of the exploitation of the subseries 0. Since the delivery of the first subseries was late, the Italian Railways lent to the JŽ 6 locomotives 361 to operate on the newly electrified line. From the early 60s till the mid 80s, locomotives from the series 1061 accounted for the most of the hauling equipment on the Rijeka line. Since there has been a change of current on the section Zagreb - Moravice, these locomotives are presently used for hauling trains between Rijeka and Moravice (also on the freight line to Bakar) and between Rijeka and Šapjane, i.e. Ilirska Bistrica (in Slovenia). In the former Yugoslavia, these locomotives were operating on the (Ljubljana) Ilirska Bistrica - Rijeka line.
In
1976 an auto-stop device was built in the locomotives.
In
the late 80s, two damaged locomotives (362 003 and 362 106) were converted into
locomotives for the current of 25kV and 50Hz (JŽ 462
- HŽ 1161).

You
can observe the HŽ 1061 series engines on (Ilirska Bistrica, Slovenia) — Šapjane
— Rijeka — Škrljevo — Moravice line, and on Škrljevo — Bakar freight
line. Since this is the sole HŽ locomotive series powered at 3,000 V DC, it is
the only which can be seen on the lines mentioned. All Croatian units of the
series have been repainted to blue-silver livery and assigned the new serial
numbers. However, Slovenian railways own identical locomotives (save subclass
100) still carrying the old numeration (SŽ 362) and the original yellow livery
with three black stripes.
