Doubleheaded Class 42s 869 Zest & 870 Zulu on the up Cornish Riviera on June 14, 1969. Photographed from the train, held by signals at Bristol Temple Meads Station. The train was diverted via Bristol because of a derailment near Castle Cary. In the hot weather the track gauge had distorted.

Class 42 'Warship', D818, named Glory, lies derelict at Swindon Works, 30/08/85. This locomotive was withdrawn in December 1972 after a service life of approximately 12 years. It languished in Swindon Works for the remaining 13 years of its existance, being occasionally used for apprentice painting practise. Despite being listed as preserved by a number of publications, D818 was cut up for scrap in October 1985 as part of the rundown and eventual closure of Swindon Works.

D832's simularity in appearence with the German V200 locos means that the two are closely related. Unlike most British diesels, which are diesel electric, this one is diesel hydraulic and would have been seen hauling trains mostly in the Western Region during the 60's and early 1970's.

We believe this is a close relative of the German class V200. British Warship D832 'Onslaught' or class 42 is seen at Leicester North in September 2004 at the Great Central Railway's Diesel Gala providing a rare opportunity to travel behind one of these diesel hydraulic locos.
