Helsinki Rautatientori / Helsingfors Järnvägstorget This is the platform of Helsinki Rautatientori / Helsingfors Järnvägstorget, the central station of Helsinki (Helsingfors in Swedish), capital of Finland, as seen in August 1990. The gauge here is 1,524 millimeters which is also used in Russia and other Confederation of Independent States, as opposed to the continental European gauge of 1,435 millimeters. © 1990, 2005 Josh Hanz (josh_hanz@hotmail.com) |
Helsinki Rautatientori / Helsingfors Järnvärgstorget This is Helsinki's central station in the capital city of Finland. Note the "RAUTATIENTORI JÄrnvÄRGSTORGET" sign on the top of the station entrance. I arrived at this station from a direct train from St. Petersburg in August 1990, when St. Petersburg was still known as Leningrad (still in the days of the USSR). Vainikkala station in Finland This is Vainikkala station in Finland as seen in August 1990. I took a train from Leningrad (now St. Peterburg) Finland station to Helsinki, Finland, via Vyborg and Vainikkala (Finland). This train is stopped, to change engines, from the Soviet electric locomotive to a Finnish locomotive. This is the first station after leaving the USSR and entering Finland. © 1990, 2005 Josh Hanz (josh_hanz@hotmail.com) |
