Bregenz_12sept2000_002.jpg (87342 bytes)

Bregenz - tracks to Germany

This is a rear view from a train headed into Switzerland, that has just left Lindau in Germany and is due to arrive shortly in Bregenz (Austrian state capital of Vorarlberg).

Trains heading the opposite direction will stop at Lindau, and depending on their destination, will switch an Austrian/Swiss electric locomotive for a diesel locomotive to Munich or Ulm, or a German electric locomotive through Friedrichshafen.

Graz_Lagergasse.jpg (104413 bytes)

Junction in Graz (looking east). The line comes from Graz Hauptbahnhof and goes straight across the Mur river towards Graz Ostbahnhof. The track towards the right is an industrial siding, only rarely used. The approach signal before the bridge announces a stop signal and a speed restriction of 70 km/h. 2003-02-23.

Johnsbach_1044+E.jpg (148196 bytes)

E 1802 "Nationalpark Gesäuse" Wien-Selzthal-Schladming, pulled by an ÖBB 1044, just departed from station Johnspach im Nationalpark; 18.09.2004. This spectacular narrows of the Enns river is called 'Gesäuse', because the river's amplified noise is constantly heard throughout it.

Kalwang_Wald.jpg (91849 bytes)

The section between Kalwang and Wald am Schoberpass is actually being double-tracked and also the alignment is being improved to allow higher speeds. Between Kalwang and the southern portal of the Unterwald-tunnel trains are already using the new alignment, but actually only one track has been finished. The section is due to open in late 2003. The picture has been taken from a train (IC 512). 2003-07-30.

Schleppbahn_Graz1.jpg (148423 bytes)

A view of the "Schleppbahn", an industrial track branching off between Graz Hauptbahnhof - Graz Ostbahnhof and going southwards along the river Mur for a few kilometers. As you can see, most of it is unused; the two tracks on the left are still in service for a recycling company. The river is right of the bicycle trail (Johann-Puch-Weg). Some politicians have made the proposal to convert these tracks to a regional passenger railway, but this has not much chance to become reality as it is mostly an industrial area, too far away from residential areas to be attractive.

Stanzertal_1020.jpg (134153 bytes)

Part of the Arlberg line has been rebuilt to a high performance double-track line with top speed 140 km/h (the old single track was mostly limited to 70 km/h). Cab view from the 1020 042-6, which can't go any faster than 90 km/h.

Windischgarsten_curvingtrack.jpg (134917 bytes)

ÖBB's Pyhrn route near Windischgarsten (seen from regional train 3956 Selzthal-Linz) takes an S-curve through improbable terrain - a wide flat basin in an otherwise deep and narrow valley dotted with some steep hills; 18.09.2004.
