What's in the Harz ?
1995, Mallet stays in the Harz
After a long conflict between the DEV group (Bruchhausen - Vilsen), the HSB and DB AG (as a successor of DR), the ex-Heereslfeldbahn Mallet 99 5906, ex-NWE 41, finally stays on the Harz: it is a unique piece of equipment on the Harz but not in the world of preserved steam locomotives because a similar locomotive is preserved in Switzerland on the Blonay-Chamby museum railway.
The case was settled mid-95, with a decision to give another Mallet locomotive, also a 0440T, also built by MBK, to the DEV instead: this one comes from the Albtalbahn and has no specific historical meaning in relation with the Harz.
All the detail is including in the pages devoted to Mallet 99 5906 ( )
And, according to press-releases, everybody feels rather happy...
The locomotive was then overhauled at Meiningen according to a HU L7, received an air brake equipment, and was sent back to its "home" network early december 1995:
- a test run was successfully performed 06/12/1995 and the machine was commisionned by HSB,
- a maiden run was performed 17/12/1995 between Gernrode (Harz) et Harzgerode,
- ... and since 18/12/1995 on, it is back into service on the Selketalbahn.
