Railway Direction of Zagreb concluded on 1978/06/20 to purchase new diesel-electric locomotives of the General Motors type, but with a lesser axle pressure and with electric heating system. Total number of thirty units was constructed by Gjuro Gjakovic Works under the licence and using the equipment of Electro Motive Division of General Motors Co., USA. New headlights were installed in September 1997 onto units no. 2044-001, 012, 017 and 020 (all of these stored at Varazdin locomotive depot).
