CFR (ex) 4000 HP Diesel-Electric loco class 70, no. 27 (I don't know the redundancy code!), rusting in the Oradea depot on a cloudy Saturday afternoon. This one of the last three class 70 Diesels to remain in Oradea, the rest were brought to Strehaia yard in order to be scrapped. Quite a bitter end for CFR's strongest ever Diesel locos! 5 Jul 2003

It wears, near the new CFR code the old code (painted on it) according to which these locos were the DD class (e.g. class 60 was DA, class 62 was DA1 and, I'm not sure, class 61 was DB. For the rest, I don't know). 5 Jul 2003

CFR (ex) 4000 HP Diesel-Electric loco class 70, no. 16 (I don't know the redundancy code!), seen between some class 60/62 Diesel locos in quite the same condition, rusting in the Oradea depot on a cloudy Saturday afternoon. This is one of the last three class 70 Diesels to remain in Oradea, the rest were brought to Strehaia yard in order to be scrapped. A cooler fan protection (probably from CFR class 70 - 0027) rusting peacefully in the mud. At least this part will escape scrapping! Oradea depot, 5 Jul 2003

An once proud ALCO 4000 HP V16 motor, now a rusty ruin...Seen on CFR class 70, no. 27, Oradea depot. Their two-stroke Diesel sound will not be easy forgotten while pulling some 800 ton - 1000 ton freight trains on the gradients between Cluj and Oradea. There are also some histories (not verified) about some broken couplings when starting.
But I must agree that this can be possible from a personal experience. In the winter 1996/1997, as the typical class 61 used for hauling the train Satu-Mare - Bucharest (also al ALCO-powered loco) got in trouble (electrical problems) in Vadu Crisului and a class 70 was brought from Oradea to the rescue. As I was in the first car, I remeber the noise, the fumes and the "bumpy" ride. But it was one hell of an experience. 5 Jul 2003

CFR class 71 diesel locomotive rusting in Ramnicu Valcea depot
Class 71 diesel locomotives where designed in 1976, for pulling heawy passenger and freight trains. Because they had a high fuel and oil consumption and they where intended for long journeys, they where little used. Today they are out of service. 71-0001-9 is a 4000 hp diesel locomotive. The 16 cylinders engine was built in Romania, under ALCO license. The locomtive has an electric transmision and can reach a top speed of 140 km/h. Photo and scan by: Andrei Berinde (fbvro@xnet.ro) |
