What a nice way to begin 2008; on the very first morning, well maintained CP 1427-9 performs shunting duties at Lisboa's Santa Apolónia station. These 'steeple cab' locomotives, with 970 CV at rail, provided reliable traction -not fast, though- on a variety of services since their introduction in 1966-69. CP 1427-9 at Santa Apolónia. Introduced in 1966-69, these brave 713 kW locomotives built under English Electric licence by SOREFAME -the first 10 were actually built by Vulcan Works- constitute CP's most numerous and versatile class; from the original 67, 32 are still active, 8 are in store and 19 have been sold to further use, mainly with Argentinean operators (01-2008). When we arrived at Lagos station all we could see were class 600 DMUs, when suddenley a class 14
came in. This example 1427 is an English Electric design and is closely related to the British class 20.
We were naturally hoping for 'a bash' behind one of these. Hopes were therefore raised... only to be
quickly dashed when I asked the driver if it was forming the '1507 to Faro' and he pointed to the unit. Ah well at least it
enabled us to take some photos before we set off. The date incidently was Sunday 14th September 2003.
