CP 1427-9 at Santa Apolónia. Introduced in 1966-69, these brave 713 kW locomotives built under English Electric licence by SOREFAME -the first 10 were actually built by Vulcan Works- constitute CP's most numerous and versatile class; from the original 67, 32 are still active, 8 are in store and 19 have been sold to further use, mainly with Argentinean operators (01-2008). With 42 years of reliable service they are a tribute to both English engineering and dedicated Portuguese maintenance teams.
