The Neisse river, which also is the border between Germany (to the left) and Poland (on the right). This photo was taken from the footbridge leading from the German town Ostritz to the railway station Krzewina Zgorzelecka (which serves Ostritz but is located on the other side of Neisse, that belongs to Poland since 1945). Just a few years ago, I would not have dared to stop on the middle of the bridge to take this picture, then you were still observed by armed border guards who probably would not have liked that.

Interior of PKP station Krzewina Zgorzelecka in 2005, five years after the last PKP passenger train. As you can see, the old timetable (with trains to Bogatynia) is still hanging there.

It may look abandoned but the PKP station Krzewina Zgorzelecka is still served by passenger trains (presently operated by Lausitzbahn) between Görlitz and Zittau. As there are no PKP trains any more, the ticket office, waiting room and toilets are closed.

The station of Krzewina Zgorzelecka in Poland, near the German
border, with an old wagon used as storage room. The trains
Görlitz - Zittau stop in this station; passengers have to go
through passport control if they leave the station towards
Poland. This border curiosity is a consequence of the Oder-Neiße
border which was defined after the second world war, when this
railway, which crosses the river (and hence the border) four
times, was in operation since long. 2001-09-15.

Krzewina Zgorzelecka is a Polish station but all German trains on the
line Görlitz-Zittau stop here to serve the village just across
the river=border. Apart from this two Polish train pairs (to Bogatynia)
stop on this station. Changing from a German to a Polish train is NOT
possible because the border crossing (for pedestrians only) is closed
when the Polish trains stop here in early morning and late evening...
[in the mean time, Polish trains have ceased running, MvU]

Departure times of the Polish trains in Krzewina Zgorzelecka above
the (closed) ticket office. Two trains daily to Bogatynia, two trains
to Jelenia Gora. That's all! But many more (German) trains stop here
to serve the German village Ostritz just across the border river.
