Thanks to a teamwork between the Norwegian State Railways and the Norwegian Public Road Administration, the magnificent viaducts at Hølen between Oslo and Moss were erected in the nineties. While the southbound intercity train Oslo-Halden passes in 160 km/h, the speed limit on the highway is 100 km/h.

NSB - Norway In Nelaug not only the branch line to Arendal starts, but also a branch line to the north. It still looks in very good condition, although it has not seen trains for a considerable amount of time. My 10-year old map show a freight-only line from Nelaug to Simonstad, but it has once continued even further north. Nelaug, 22 June 2004 Digital photo by Marco van Uden |

NSB - Norway The turntable at Nelaug is still present, but I wonder if it can still be used. No railway equipment is left in the sheds surrounding it. In the background you can see the Kristiansand-Oslo main line. Nelaug, 22 June 2004 Digital photo by Marco van Uden |

There are many stunning views from the Flam Railway and this was one of my favourites.
Taken low in the valley not far from the final destination of Flam on the 22nd February 2006.

The old track, which has been replaced by the Finse tunnel, still exists, but not electrified any more and without connection to the regular track. In summer it can be used by tourists with bicycle draisines. Unfortunately I missed the season for that by a few days. Note the snow, which probably remains from last winter. Finse, 2005-08-15. |
The entrance of the Finse tunnel, which allows 160 km/h speed and replaced a long open track section. West of Finse, 2005-08-15. |
A traditional wooden overhead mast and a speed restriction sign near Hamar, Norway. The line speed is 100 km/h, for tilting trains 105 km/h. 2005-08-16. |
