NSB/Flåmsbana El 17.2227 in Flåm, ready for departure, 2005-08-14. The line Flåm - Myrdal is the steepest of Norway, with up to 5.5 % gradients. Since 1998/2000 it is operated with six-car trains (five B3, one BF3) with a locomotive El 17 at each end. Those locomotives, a light version of DB class 120 (3000 kW, 150 km/h, 240 kN, 16.3 m, 64 t), were originally built 1981 for express trains, but have meanwhile been replaced in those services by El18. |

NSB/Flåmsbana El 17.2230 in Myrdal, just arrived from Flåm, 2005-08-14. Five locomotives of class El 17 are in service on this line (four with the two trainsets, one in reserve). |
NSB/Flåmsbana El 17.2230 in Myrdal, 2005-08-14. The line Myrdal - Flåm is nowadays operated as a "private" railway, but that only seems to mean that it's more expensive (110 NOK each way on top of Scanrail/Interrail) - the line and the rolling stock is still owned/operated by NSB. Most trains in summer season are full of traveller groups coming from the sea. |

A loco of Norwegian State Railways class El 17 hauling a regional train from Gjøvik to Oslo. When they were introduced in the early eighties, the locos of class El 17 served the prestige expresses on the Oslo-Trondheim line. However, during the last 20 years, their duties became more and more modest due to technical problems and insufficient traction power. Today, they are only in service on the Oslo-Gjøvik line (124 kilometres) and the beautiful Myrdal-Flåm line.

NSB El 17 2231 "Oddbjørn" in Oslo S with a train to Gjøvik. The locomotive is
painted in dark green Flåmsbana livery. On long distance trains, the El 17,
which represents the first generation of 3-phase AC traction, has meanwhile
been replaced by the more powerful El 18. Note the two different pantographs
on this locomotive.
