RESTAURANT-CAR, CLASS Eo No. 980 When the Bergen line - our first tourist line was opened in 1909, the need for restaurant-cars came up, and during the period 1909-1911, 5 such cars were built. One of these, class Eo no. 980 is preserved at the Railway Museum. The car has a kitchen, a combined washing-up room, pantry, a cashiers kiosk - but no WC. The foods were cooked on a big coal-fired kitchen-range, and to do the work it was necessary with 7 employees at the same time. After the car came out of service in 1968 it was restored at the workshop Marienborg before it was transfered to the Railway Museum on the 18th of

Interior of NSB bistro car FR7-3 , line Bergen - Oslo, 2005-08-14.
These cars were rebuilt from combined kiosk/expressgoods cars, now offering a bit more space for dining, but still the choice is rather limited, it's self-service and still comparably expensive. Also due to the rebuilding, some tables don't have large windows. |
