The engine is a 4+4 V cylinder FIAT 218SSF with direct fuel injection, with a power output of 1,350 HP at 1500 rpm.
The electric generator is a DC one produced by Tecnomasio Italiano Brown Boveri (TIBB), with a power of 750 kW (1,010 hp).
The electric motors, one for each bogie, were produced by Ansaldo.

The ALn 442-448 railcars were particular double diesel railcars of the Italian State Railways built in the second half of the fifties of the last century with the aim of preparing in a short time a train capable of carrying out Trans Europ Express international services:
the thermal traction it did not impose the change of the locomotive at the border, which was necessary in the case of electric traction as a result of the different power supply and operating systems.
They were used, at the end of their career in some local services until 24 October 1982.
The last services saw them engaged in special trains, for amateur and agency services, until June 1995.
On 2 February 2023, the two units 448-460.2008 were taken over by the FS Foundation and transferred from the SanthiĆ workshops to the DORS of La Spezia Migliarina, for recovery work.

FS (Ferrovie dello Stato - Italian State Railways, now Trenitalia) classic Bo-Bo small Electric loco E.424-249.
Breda SpA workshop provided the three prototypes of E.424 in 1943-1944.
Mass production, however, could begin only after the end of World War II, until the 1951, part of the funds provided by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration program.
A total of 158 units were manufactured. Starting from 1986, to 1993, 105 units have received 78-wire cable to permit remote control for use with commuter trains, and maximum speed was raised to 120 km/h (75 mph).
These units are also referred to as E.424N, where "N" stands for "Navetta" (push-pull); also, number 200 has been added to units' serial number (i.e. E.424.116 became E.424.316). The last units of teh E.424 class have been decommissioned in 2008.
E.424-249 is one of the machine modified for push pull operation but it has been restored to the original conditions.
