Shed pilot at Bangalore City was Southern Railway MG 2-8-2 MAWD 1597, a war emergency design that was widely nicknamed "Macarthur" after the WW2 United States Army general. This engine posed an identity puzzle. MAWD 1597 was built by the American Locomotive Company (Alco 70942/1943), but it carries the boiler off MAWD 1714 (Baldwin 69439/1943). So, which was correct - the frames/wheels, or the boiler? 29.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
Mayuram engine shed's coaling and fire-cleaning area was an all-in-one, rudimentary affair. Three Class ST 2-6-4T receive attention - left to right: ST 37367 (NW 1650/1938), ST 37377 (Skoda 984/1939), ST 37370 (Skoda 977/1939); 30.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
Indian Railways had a motto: "Coal is gold". Here is the locomotive firebox cleaning area at Mayuram shed with ST 37370 (Skoda 977/1939) having had its fire cleaned for men to shovel the hot ash from the pit, for women to sift by hand, to reclaim any unburned particles. Hot, gruelling work! 30.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
By November 1979 Mayuram engine shed was home to the remaining MG Class ST 2-6-4T. ST 37367 (Naysmith Wilson 1650/1938) uses the turntable at Mayuram engine shed; 30.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
Station pilot at Mayuram was leaky, Southern Railway MG 2-6-2 YL 5213 (Henschel 29481/1956); 30.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
In a photograph taken from a semaphore signal gantry, MG 2-6-2 YL 5197 (Henschel 29465/1956) leaves Mayuram with T635 Mayuram-Tirutiraipundi passenger train; 30.11.1979 - CopyRoger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |

The Southern Railway also had a MG shed at Bangalore City, seen here with 4-6-2 YP 2069 (Kraus-Maffei 17780/1952) being serviced after its last duty. The headboard tells us that the locomotive had hauled passenger trains T1071 from Mysore to Maddur, then T1063 from Maddur to Bangalore; 29.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
The lower-quadrant semaphore signal has cleared the way for MG 4-6-2 YP 2850 (Telco 1135/1969) to depart from Mayuram with its long-distance T109, Madras-Sengottai passenger service; 30.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |

The Southern Railway MG half-roundhouse at Mayuram Junction was surrounded by a large field bearing the ashes of many years' burning of coal. Note that apart from locomotives, the depot building was also sheltering a red-painted breakdown crane; 30.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
Southern Railway, Bangalore Cantonment BG engine shed's 80-foot diameter turntable has room to spare as it rotates almost 200 tons of 2-8-2 WG 9981 (Chittaranjan 1962); 29.11.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
