Diesel-electric locomotive D20E-001 of Vietnam Railways (VNR or DSVN).
Built by Siemens (type AsiaRunner AR15VR), a six axle metre gauge
adaptation of the ER20 (ÖBB 2016). D20E means: Diesel locomotive,
2000 horsepower, Electric transmission.
Wheel arrangement Co'Co', gauge 1000 mm, mass 81 t, length 19180 mm, width 2820 mm including mirrors, height 3945 mm, bogie distance 10300 mm, axle distance in bogie 1650 mm, wheel diameter 1016 mm, maximum speed 120 km/h, diesel engine MTU 12V 4000 R41, power 1500 kW, rotational speed 600 to 1800 per minute, tractive effort 260 kN at departure, 234 kN constantly at 19 km/h, electric braking force 150 kN, operational temperature range +5°C to +55°C. 20 units were delivered from 2006. The other modern locomotive is the Chinese designed D19E which is partly assembled in the Gia Lam workshops in Vietnam (80 locomotives are ordered/delivered); it seems that for further orders the Chinese design is currently favoured (does the same job, but cheaper than Siemens?) The D19E and D20E are currently the most modern and powerful locomotives in Vietnam (though compared to what would be possible on standard gauge, they are only medium power). The track and signalling systems don't allow any speeds higher than 120 km/h and it seems that most sections are much slower. InnoTrans September 2006, Berlin. |

The livery in dark turquoise and white is unique to this class, not
matching anything else on Vietnam Railways. It seems they are making up
new colours with each new locomotive class.
Siemens intended to offer this locomotive class to other railways of the
region, such as Thailand or Malaysia, but until now there have not been
any further orders. However the electric system (generator, inverters,
traction motors) was also used in the RhB Gmf 4/4 II locomotives built
2013 by Schalker Eisenhütte.

D20E-001 coming into Hue station with train SE2 (Sai Gon - Ha Noi). This locomotive was built 2006 as the first of 16 Asiarunner AR15VR locomotives by Siemens; I had first visited it when it was shown on the InnoTrans that year - see my other Photos in this directory. Length 19180 mm, 1500 kW, 120 km/h. 2014-05-09. |

Interior of the engine room. Of course it is narrow, being a metre gauge
locomotive, so not much space for the side corridor.

The D11H-348 was built in Romania, part of a series delivered 1978 to
1980. They are similar to narrow gauge locomotives in Bulgaria.
