Haifa-Kishon workshops, in 1997 (I think). Line-up of old ISR stock just outside the diesel shop. The passenger car is a German Esslingen a-la-VT08 trailer, bought in 1955 and now totally out of use. Behind it are a Palestine Railways steam locomotive's tender, and several old ISR coaches.

Jerusalem, Israel, 12/05/2005.
A DMU arrived to the station Jerusalem Malha in the late afternoon. At the time of the picture a yellow cloud coming from the desert covered the sky. Egy motorvonat érkezett Jeruzsálem-Malha állomásra, késő délután. A kép készítésekor az égboltot sárga sivatagi felhők takarták be. Photo: Zoltán Ádám Németh (nza@freemail.hu) |

Since several years now, ISR’s passenger fleet consists of new Danish IC3 diesel trainsets. Two such sets are seen here at the Haifa-East diesel depot.

In 1955, ISR bought several diesel trainsets from the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen (MFE) in Germany, strongly resembling DB’s VT08 sets. The sets lasted for only a short time before they proved too expensive to maintain. The weak motors were taken out and sold to the Israeli navy, and, after another decade as ordinary coaches, all the sets were finally rounded up and sent to rot in Haifa-Kishon. A pity!

In 1955, Israel received a shipment of diesel switchers and trainsets from West Germany. Thirty-three years later in Tel Aviv, this is all that is left of those German sets. Even the station itself no longer exists, having been replaced by a new one in the early 1990s. Such a complete set would have made a perfect example of early ISR stock, and could have been used as a special museum train. Unfortunately, this wasn’t to be due to lack of budget.

When it was new. In 1955, a brand new diesel trainset for Israel is posing outside the Linke-Hoffman-Busch factory in Salzgitter, Germany. Only a decade later, this set lost its motors and was reduced to the less glamorous status of ordinary passenger stock.

Tel Aviv, August 2001: there is an MF Esslingen railcar preserved at the Country Museum in the north of the city, along with two small diesels and one freight car. Here's how the diesel car looks from inside - and that's considered to be preservation!
Note the Peugeot 203 advertised above the amazingly narrow driver's cabin. The last time that anyone bothered to look into this trailer was somewhere in the mid-1970s. It was sent to Haifa-East for another ten years, where it was to be scrapped, until the museum in Tel Aviv agreed to swap their Hedjaz Railway Krauss 0-6-0 steamer, now kept in Haifa-East, with something bigger and newer. ISR gave them the diesel trailer rightaway. Photo and scan by Alon Siton <a_siton@hotmail.com> |

Soreq-valley, Israel, 12/05/2005.
The recently reopened railway line to Jerusalem: DMU 7008 heading Tel Aviv waiting in a passing loop. As basically all lines were reconstructed recently in Israel, the train service is only for intercity connection. Thus on the way between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem there are only four intermedaite stations. However, since there is a train every hour, there are passing loops on the way, which are situated at former stations - and now they are disused. A nemrég újra megnyitott vasútvonal Jeruzsálem felé: a 7008-as motorvonat Tel Aviv felé haladva egy forgalmi kitérőben várakozik.

The terminus of this trainset was Tel Aviv Merkaz, as it came from Jerusalem. Whithout passengers it goes north, where it is stored on a siding.

The disadvantage of the 15 coach trainset is, that at most of the stations, it does not fit near the platform. On this picture the last coach opened its doors - but there is no platform. A 15 kocsis szerelvények hátránya, hogy a legtöbb állomásra már nem fér be. Ezen a képen is látható, hogy a szerelvény utolsó kocsijának nyitott ajtaja mellett már nincs peron. Tel Aviv, Israel, 29/04/2005.
The intercity route Be'er-Sheva - Nahariyya is the longest journey in Israel: round 3 and a half hours and 250 km. This train goes all the way through the densly inhabited coastal area, from the Negev desert to the border of Lebanon. On this route the danish rubber-headed DMUs run, this one had 15 coaches (five sets coupled).
