India_BG_WG & bullocks Patna
Indian Railway steam power, bullock power and manpower! The distant Eastern Railway WG is shunting wagons full of ballast and aggregate, which will be taken away to work sites by bullock cart or by a man in the shafts of a barrow; simple, effective and cheap! Patna 7 December 1979

India_BG_WG 8084 Futwah
7 December 1979 and Eastern Railway 2-8-2 WG 8084 accelerates sharply away from Futwah with Train T429 a stopping passenger service from Mokama to Patna. As always in India, the presence of someone toting a camera caused immense interest and sometimes the crowd got a little difficult to work with! That happened on this occasion, so refuge was sought in Futwah West Signal Box, much to the chagrin of the spectators!

India_BG_WG 8408 Gwalior
Stand-off at Gwalior on 10 December 1979 as the “iron horse” meets a flesh and blood cow! Central Railway 2-8-2 WG 8408 had to stop short in the platform with its passenger train from Delhi, because the cow refused to be moved! Cows are the subject of worship in India so it was not until the animal was gently coaxed to walk away that the train was able to proceed.

7 December 1979 and more cheap labour at Patna Junction’s small locomotive depot, where a pair of typically dirty Eastern Railway WG have dropped ashes, which are now being cleared and sorted by male and female labourers. Notice the young girl at left; our guide says she was 15 years old and that is her baby sitting on the ground beside her!

India: Delhi Junction No.1: Double-track broad gauge (BG) and metre gauge (MG) lines entered Delhi Junction station from the west. The BG was used by Indian Railways' Northern Railway while the MG was shared by the Northern and Western Railways. Just outside the station BG and MG lines diverged south to enter New Delhi station. Each weekday morning there was a 95% steam-hauled, “rush hour” of commuter and long-distance trains, on both gauges, with a large number of movements to be seen in just a few hours. Add to this the use of the railway tracks as footpaths by the local population and you had a very interesting scene. These photos were taken on the morning of Tuesday, 11 December, 1979; nowadays, all lines are broad gauge and overhead electrified. The rising sun is just beginning to break through the thick haze hanging over Delhi, as BG 2-8-2 WG 9973 arrives with a commuter train from Khurja Junction. India_Pune_engine shed Central Railway Pune engine shed, hand-coaling the enormous tender of BG 2-8-2 WG 8504 (Franco-Belge 2690/1955). Such dangerous and laborious work practices were normal for Indian Railways’ steam depots where there was an over-supply of cheap labour and life was as cheaply held. The two ladies and child were resting from their duties of picking through piles of discarded ash to find any unburned particles of coal. 22.11.1979. India_Vadodara_shed_interior The Western Railway’s broad gauge engine shed at Vadodara, formerly Baroda, though situated on an electrified main line, had, in 1979, many duties for Pacifics and 2-8-2s, off the electrified sections. Eventually though, steam was totally superseded and today, a large electric locomotive depot occupies the former site of the steam shed. The interior of Vadodar shed where one locomotive is identified at right: 2-8-2 WG 9321 (Chittaranjan 1956), which has had a repair and now a sign-writer is updating the locomotive’s painted repair record on the cab side. India_Gwalior_station_NH5_812_and_WG_9379 The Gwalior Light Railway, later the Scindia State Railway, opened in 1899 and gradually expanded, until three separate lines radiated from Gwalior, to Bhind, Sheopur Kalan and Shivpuri. At its total maximum length of 250 miles it was the world’s longest 2ft gauge system and in December 1979 remained entirely steam worked, as part of the Central Railway. Eventually diesel locomotives took over until the last section, to Sheopur Kalan, closed in 2010. Broad gauge, electrified lines now serve Gwalior, Bhind and Shivpuri, while the Shepur Kalan line is reportedly undergoing gauge conversion. A meeting of 'Mikados!' Gwalior station NG (2ft) 2-8-2 No.NH5 812 (Nip 1782/1959) & BG 2-8-2 WG 9379 (Chittaranjan 1956) offer a comparison of their relative sizes; 10.12.1979. Roger Griffiths roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
