WDM2A is a designation given to some of the WDM2 refitted with compressed air brakes (originally they had vacuum brakes) but others have that brake without the "A" ... Indian Railways diesel locomotive WDM2S No. 17522. Based in Ludhiana, marked "Only fit for shunting service". This is the most numerous diesel locomotive of India with more than 2700 units built since 1962, the first came directly from Alco (type DL560C). EMD locomotives were also imported and tested but only Alco offered a transfer of technology agreement, so this type was chosen for mass production at the newly set up Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi.
