fr-lu_Zouftgen_1.jpg (39349 bytes)

This is the Bettembourg-Zouftgen portion (Luxemburg-Thionville line), seen from the rear car of EC97 "Iris" (Brussels-Chur).

At this stage the car was still in the Great Duchy, yet very very close to the French border...

The train had already passed a French signal which announces the changeover.

This segment features a long 12%o (1 in 80) gradient.

Pre-electrification (1956), there was a 380-m tunnel on the Luxemburg side, accross this gradient, approximately between the two bridges in the background.

Zouftgen. 17th June 2004.

lu-fr_Dudelange-Zouftgen_a2.jpg (68026 bytes)

L3 (Luxembourg-Réding), seen close to the border with France.

Pic looks South, towards Zouftgen and Thionville.

One can notice pretty well the remnants of the original tunnel (381m) of 1859, destroyed under the electrification of Luxembourg-Thionville (1956).

lu-fr_Dudelange-Zouftgen_a3.jpg (81365 bytes)

L3 (Luxembourg-Réding), seen close to the border with France.

Pic looks North, towards Luxembourg-Ville and the marshalling yard of Bettembourg.

One can can guess pretty well where the Northern portal of the original tunnel (381m) of 1859 was located.

Same place as in a4, seen from the rear car of EC 97 "Iris" (Bruxelles-Midi/Brussel-Zuid --->Zürich Hbf), while nearing the border with France.

The 12%o (1 in 83) gradient is well in evidence here.

lu-fr_Dudelange-Zouftgen_b1.jpg (56152 bytes)

L3 (Luxembourg-Réding), seen very close to the border with France, looking North.

West to the trackbed, the remnants of the original tunnel of 1859 (381m) and which had survived electrification (1956) were replaced with a standard concrete barrier in 2003/2004.

L3 (Luxembourg-Réding), seen very close to the border with France, looking South, towards Zouftgen and Thionville.

Whereas the border is still to come, within that curve in the background, one can already notice French signalling and speed signs.

At this stage, top speed ranges from 130 to 140km/h, depending on the class of train.

lu-fr_Dudelange-Zouftgen_d2.jpg (68831 bytes)

Here we are: L3 (Luxembourg-Réding), seen at the border with France, looking South.

On the French side, the border stands at Km 207.3 from Strasbourg-Ville, actually a remnant of the days of the Kaiserliche Direktion der Eisenbahnen in Elsaß-Lothringen...

Here we are: French-Luxemburg border, on L3 (Luxembourg-Réding).

The panel "Réseau SNCF" warns of the country change. Sadly, the public footpath which I used, part of the Dudelange Forest, bends further right, and does extend into France (Zouftgen).
