First type M62 locomotives appeared in Lithuania in the year 1971 replacing the freight service steam locomotives. M62 locomotives became the first mainline locomotives in Lithuania. They are used at present in lower trafic density lines for traction of freight trains up to 2500 tons. In addition, they are used as traction for maintenance trains and machinery in track maintenance operations. Although M62 are freight locomotives, they can be used in passenger train service up to 100 km/hr and are presently used for passenger trains No. 27/28 Vilnius-Warsaw ( up to the border station of Mockava) and passenger train No. 471/472-480 Vilnius-Siauliai-Mazeikiai. When required, they are also used in other passenger routes. Lithuanian Railways own (72) M62 locomotives, which are based in Vilnius and Radviliskis locomotive depots.
