The first type M62 locomotives appeared in 1971 , replacing the freight service steam locomotives.M62 locomotives became the first mainline diesel locomotives in Lithuania. From 1975 in Lithuania, railway freight traffic was growing. When freight trains began to exceed 2500 tons, there was a need for two class M62 for the additional needed traction effort. In 1976 the locomotive factory in Lugansk (Ukraine) started building locomotives class 2M62 for heavier freight traffic. The model 2M62 was actually two M62 models back to back, coupled in m.u. with a covered walkway between the units. In 1976 the first model 2M62 were delivered to Lithuania. The 2M62 is used today on heavy traffic on main lines with freight trains up to 5000 tons. In addition, they are sometimes used as power for maintenance trains and machinery in track maintenance operations. Modernized 2M62Y (with bigger fuel tanks, modern bogies, new electrical equipment and engine) came to Lithuania Railways in 1988. Lithuanian Railways company own 6 locomotives 2M62Y they are based only in Vilnius locomotive shop. Although 2M62 and 2M62Y are freight locomotives, when required they can be used in passenger train service, with speeds up to 100 km/hr. Lithuanian Railways owns 96 2M62 (including 2M62Y) locomotives, which are based in Vilnius and Radviliskis locomotive shops.
