The railway station of the state Vatican City - now used only for freight. The last passenger, which used it, was Pope John XXIII, he used this station for the way to Assisi in 1961. It was a very strange situation because the Vatican state had no personal carriages. Finally it was the italian president who submitted to pope his representative train... I am sorry for the quality, but this was a guided tour through the Vatican City gardens and I had no opportunity to come nearer and my camera is very poor. The railway station of the state Vatican City. Here you see the entry to the tunnel, where the tracks end (Vatican City is a hill, there is not enough flat space). Up in the background there is a bridge where from I've taken the previous photo. I should never believe that I'll have an opportunity to see the railways station of the smallest state all over the world (all the track in state Vatican is no longer than some 500 meters). Sorry for confusion. Instead of Vatican2 foto I should send this one: The railway station of the state Vatican City. I was very surprised to have this opportunity - sorry there was no train. Under my position the railway tracks end in a tunnel. On the opposite side (it can't by seen from this position, but I couldn't leave the guided group to search a better possibility) there is a huge iron gate which has to be unlocked for the trains coming to Vatican City from Italy Some of you might see it from the Italian side - it is not far from the FS station Roma-San Pietro.
