Station of ERCOLANO SCAVI in the City of Naples, on the line: Napoli Porta Nolana - Sorrento of the private railway "CIRCUMVESUVIANA" - view in direction centre of Naples. If you want to visit the still active volcano Vesuvius, you should take the private railway "Circumvesuviana" in direction Sorrento; get off at Ercolano Scavi and a taxi-minibus will bring you in 20 minutes to a point on the height of 1000 m; after that point you will go on foot and reach the crater. The crater is opened during the whole year, instead on bad weather conditions (rain, snow and storm). In just 10 minutes of walking from this station you will reach the archaeological excavations of the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum. In the eruption of the Vesuvius on 29.08.0079 at one hour at night the whole town of Herculaneum was covered by pyroclastic flow (together with the famous town of Pompei) and all inhabitants were killed. Since mid 18th century the excavations are accessible for public. The current town has the name: Ercolano and is a part of the City of Naples. If you travel to Naples, don't miss to visit the crater of Vesuvius as well as the excavacations of Herculaneum and Pompeii - the trip is spectacular! You will meet very friendly people, but in Naples - be aware of pockets!!! Foto and scan: Slobodan Ilic, 17.03.2006 (slobodan.ilic@bluewin.ch)
