Lost forever: a FS class E444 (original) with IC611 "Cavour" Torino P.N. - Roma T.ni, carrying 1st class TEE coaches in their former cream-red wonderful (and unforgettable) livery, at Rapallo in August 1989.

FS E444 003 at Roma Termini in Spring 1990, just arrived with an intercity, probably from Torino.
This engine is one of the four prototype units (001-004) of class E444, different from the rest of the class both in the look and in the equipment. The photo is not too good but is the only one I ever managed to take, because the four prototypes spent most of their life on the tyrrhenian line, very far from my area, pulling fast trains from Roma to Torino and Napoli or even more south, and it was almost impossible to meet them somewhere else in Italy. All four prototypes are retired (003 was the last on duty). No. 002 and no. 004 were scrapped while no. 001 will probably undergo restore operations in order to be displayed in Pietrarsa Railway Museum; I don't know if no. 003 still exist. FS E444 005 at Milano Centrale in 1990.
This engine was built as a prototype unit with full choppers electronic rating control device instead of the usual rheostatic device and eventually rebuilt like the series units. Now the whole class, with the exception of the four prototypes 001-004, has been rebuilt with new cabs and many other modifications, so the look of these engines has changed a lot. It's 7.30 p.m. and FS E444 035 throws a long shadow down the embankment while approaching Ferrara with IC551 "Brenta" from Venezia s.L. to Roma T.ni on September 5th, 1992.

FS E444 039 with a train to Bologna at Ferrara in 1987.
Note that, since the engine is not fitted for remote control, it is coupled to the lead car end of the train. Photo and scan by Jacopo Fioravanti (jacopofioravanti@katamail.com). |

FS E444 086 (original) with a southbound IC composed of GC-type 1st class coaches (at the rear end) and UIC-Z 2nd class coaches in the former cream-grey livery with blue stripes (behind the engine), so that this train appeared in a uniform cream-grey livery, with 1st and 2nd class to be distinguished just by the color of the stripes (red on the 1st - see picture GranConfortFSMN - , blue on the 2nd).

Il modello di "tartaruga" nella foto oggi non esiste piu', tutte le locomotive serie E444 sono state trasformate in E444R, con sensibili modifiche sia all'aspetto esteriore che alle apparecchiature.

A FS class E444 stops at Ferrara with Ic547 "Palladio" from Venezia Santa Lucia to Roma Termini on a foggy morning in Autumn 1988.
Note the thin red stripe at the bottom of the body on the cars: at that time FS didn't have enough UIC-Z 2nd class coaches to equip all IC trains, so a lot of UIC-X coaches were fitted for 200 kph speed, with hydraulic absorbers between body and bogies and window baffles against aerodynamic turbulences inside the compartments, and marked with a red sripe on the lower part of the body.
