The ÁEV (Állami Erdei Vasutak) operates narrow gauge
trains between Gyöngyös and Mátrafüred and
between Gyöngyös and Lajosháza (summer only). The
train ready to depart from Gyöngyös consists of locomotive
ÁEV 05 (Mk.48-412) and one coach.

station in Gyöngyös, Hungary. This station is about 10
minutes by foot from the MÁV station. 22/11/1999.

Mátrafüred. Here the conductor sells tickets for the
trip back to Gyöngyös (the only sensible thing to do for
a railway fan is to buy a ticket and take the next train).

To make sure the passengers are not getting cold, the ÁEV
provides a wood-fired stove in the narrow gauge coach. The wood for
firing the stove can be seen behind it underneath a bench.

Diesel-hydraulic engine Mk48 411 of the 760 mm gauge Gyöngyös system at Lajosháza, the terminal of one of the two branches (in north-eastern Hungary). This was a special train on June 22nd 1997, on the occasion of the annual open day of the system. (Each narrow-gauge line in Hungary has a dedicated day of the year when they have special trains. For more details, visit http://www.c3.hu/(levego/9803/980310b.htm). This engine was built in 1960-61 and has an output of 147 kW, with a maximum speed of 50 km/h. It was originally built for MÁV (Hungarian State Railways) with original number Mk48 2005, and was acquired by the Gyöngyös system sometime between 1976-80.
