Steam engine Nr. 8 of the Borsodnádasd roll-plate factory, in north-eastern Hungary (near Ózd). The metre-gauge system used to connect to the MÁV network at Ózd to carry steel to/from the factory. In its last year of operation, this locomotive carried waste from the factory to a dump nearby. Despite owning Romanian-built diesels as well, the steam engine was used to negotiate the gradients of the hill leading to the dump. In the end, two similar engines and a third, larger one (built in Yugoslavia) existed at the factory, all of which are now preserved by private people. One engine can be found at the open-air exhibit at Nagycenk (near Sopron). The engine is probably more than 100 years old and was photographed in April 1992, by Ferenc Joó (ferencj@mkk.zpok.hu); scan: László Szita (szita@yahoo.com). |
