ALCo locomotives were always dear to steam enthusiasts, and it's not too hard
to understand why looking at this photo ;-). Even with a load of only three
passenger coaches and one baggage coach, the classic turbo-lag of the ALCo
251 8-cylinder engine guarantees lots of awesome smoke (and a very
noticeable loud noise too, but we cannot include it in the photo...)
The metre-gauge A-9108 is the eighth in a dozen metre gauge American locomotives, which still soldier in the Peloponnesos peninsula long after their brethen in the standard gauge line went to the scrapper (only A-9110 was scrapped two years ago, despite being allegedly in a very good state). This is currently the only loco-hauled train (number 302) from Athens in the metre-gauge network, leaving Rio station for Patras in 8 May 2003, at 16.56. In older eras, it would start early from Athens, and continue all the way to Kalamata through Patras and Kyparissia, often double-headed due to many coaches.
