Its so nice when something totally unexpected appears as was the case at South Kenton
on the 16th August when the last remaining class 101 DMU now working for Network Rail
put in an appearence.

Track Recording Unit.
Class 150 derivative `Infrastructure Test Unit' at Edinburgh
Waverley. This unit was purpose built in 1987 and equipped
with track recording equipment in order to test the
quality of the permanent way. Note the former BR
`red-band' livery and different window configuration of
the two carriages. Numbers of this unit are 999600 + 999601.

MPV (Multiple Purpose Vehicle) DR98910 with powered unit DR98910 behind.
These vehicles were built in Rheine, Germany based on the Cargo sprinter.
Note they have doors on the rear of the cab rather than the sides. This one is set up for weed spraying, others are used for de-icing and sandite laying. There are other variants used for electrification work with two powered units that can be formed with intermediate wagons and also there are some double cab single units. Network Rail Class 950 departmental DMU 950001 in Cardiff Canton depot. This unit was purpose built using the same body shell as Class 150/1 DMus. The unit works as a track assessment vehicle on lines not suitable for heavier stock, such as the HST-based New Measurement Train.
This photograph was taken from the rear of the first carriage on a westbound First Great Western HST on a service from London Paddington to Swansea shortly after departing Cardiff Central (Caerdydd Canolog).

Network Rail Class 960 (ex-Class 121) DMU 960302 is the Severn Tunnel emergency train. It is seen here stabled west of Severn Tunnel Junction station, with sturdy metal coverings over the windows in what is presumably an anti-vandalism measure. Just visible on the extreme right of the photo is the nose of a Class 08 shunter. This photograph was taken from the window of a passing First Great Western HST.

Sporting the new Railtrack livery this converted 'Bubble Car' was
seen at Reading General on 21 April 2001. Though using a first
generation DMU the equipment housed inside is hi-tech for inspecting
rails. GPS systemsn allied with film and video can present a picture
of the track whilst on the move and for later review, and indication
of the exact location of any particular shot being availble at any time.
Wiht the increased concern of British Railways this unit is going to be
used a lot. Note the two large rail pointing lights.

One of the new Railtrack units seen at Reading during June 2001. These units are used for many purposes including as a replacement for the weed-killing trains that were loco hauled. A further development of this type of vehicle may see the development of a FMU (Freight Multiple Unit) for smaller loads.

Its always good to see a First Generation DMU still playing a part in todays modern railway. South West Trains have restored
this single 'Bubble' Car 960012 as a route learner and training vehicle. It is seen here possibly for the first time at
London's Waterloo station on the 5th April 2006.

HISTORY. Network Rail operates three First Generation DMUs all of which are likely to go soon. This one 901001
may survive into the New Year but any unit that is almost 50 years old is clearly down to be replaced sooner rather
than later. Seen here at Stratford on the 8th November 2007.

Single car DMUs are known to British rail enthusiasts as 'Bubble Cars'. Whilst no longer a passenger carrying vehicle
it instead is used to put sandite down during the Autumn. This class 122 now numbered 960 015 is in the old Railtrack livery
and is parked alongside Aylesbury Station on Monday 27th October 2003.

This Class 122 DMU has been active this Autumn but on the day we visited, October 27th 2003,
it was having a day off. The place is Aylesbury served by Chiltern Trains from Marylebone.

This is a converted 117 DMU that is now Chiltern Railways own water cannon train. The unit had not been given the OK
for its run down to Amersham 2 days prior to this picture being taken on Monday 27th October 2003, so we think this maybe
its very first scheduled one. Ready for the 'off' at Ayelsbury is now re-numbered 960 301.

Green 2 car class 117 DMU No 960 301 sets off on its run to Amersham and will return to
Aylesbury in an hour or so. The date is Monday 27th October 2003.

We last saw this unit in Load Haul livery back in 1998. Now it has been
refurbished and given the 'South West Trains' look who will use it for
route learning. Good to see some old DMUs still finding a place in todays
modern and increasingly uniform world. Picture at Ropley soon after making
its first appearence in the South.

This is a German built Multi-Purpose Vehicle or MPV. Judging by the white on the side and the time of year
Spring 2001 it is heading off on a weedkilling run. In the Autumn it will be used for putting sandite down to improve rail adheresion
during the leaf fall season.
