4498_Hellifield_30.4.1977. UK heritage steam in the 1960s and 1970s. A4 Pacific No.4498 Sir Nigel Gresley departs from a photo-stop at Hellifield on 30th April 1977, for the last leg of an A4 Locomotive Society Limited railtour between Newcastle and Carnforth. In the foreground a photographer uses a stack of recovered track to gain height, those rails mostly having come from the former Hellifield engine shed, the surviving floor of which is visible at left, beyond the signal gantry. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |

In the early 1980's 4498 'Sir Nigel Gresley' was active on the main line. The loco is pictured
on a 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' across the scenic Settle and Carlisle Line. This line was in later
years threatened with closure but a campiaign to save it means it still sees considerable use today.
