LMS Princess Elizabeth - though facing the wrong way I still like this shot, another express of the LMSR, which would have pounded regaulary through Crewe during its working life.

Horfield, 18 February 2006: 4-cylinder LMS Pacific 6201 Princess Elizabeth powers up the long climb of Horfield Bank, from Bristol Temple Meads to Filton, returning to Birmingham with “The Midlander”, an enthusiasts’ special of 12 coaches. 6201 was making her first visit to Bristol for many years, working one of its first trains following a lengthy and expensive repair, necessitated by a catastrophic failure of the inside motion. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the incident, which occurred during a high speed descent from Shap Summit. A true British steam LEGEND is approaching! LMS Stanier Pacific 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' is clearly in full steam having just taken Camden Bank and is now nearing Queens Park. This is only the second time in over 40 years that she has returned to London Euston having previously done so just one month ago. The loco carries the Headboard 'The Merseyside Express' and the date is Friday 4th July 2003.

As 'Princess Elizabeth' approaches the size and power of the loco becomes more apparent. It says a great deal about just how highly 6201 is regarded when this 200 mile trip is setting off on the mainline at 15.27 on a Friday afternoon, just ahead of one of the busiest periods of the week. She will certainly touch 75MPH on her way to Liverpool. Pictured about 5 minutes after departing from London Euston at Queens Park on the 4th July 2003.

As 'Lizzie' gets even closer it is worth recalling that last Autumn 6201 sustained some damage when following engineering work, that had raised the track slightly, nobody realised that this would result in 6201's chimney hitting the bridge. Fortunately as you can see, all this has now been put right and the loco is once again in tip-top condition. The place is Queens Park London and the date 4th July 2003.
