Exeter_46100_30_7_2017.jpg (136931 bytes)

Exeter_46100_30.7.2017: British Railways’ No. 46100, the doyen of the former London, Midland & Scottish Railway’s “Royal Scot” class 4-6-0, pauses at Exeter to take on water. The locomotive was hauling one of the regular “Royal Duchy” trains on a 226 mile (362km) round trip from Taunton in Somerset, to Par, in Cornwall and return. Those with sharp eyes will notice that the number 6, on the cabside, is not “standard.” When the engine was repainted, no number 6 transfers were available, so a number 9 transfer was employed, inverted! roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

Exeter_46100_namplate_30_7_2017.jpg (134541 bytes)

Exeter_46100_nameplate_30.7.2017: The nameplate of Royal Scot and the plate commemorating the locomotive’s visit to Canada and the USA in 1933, with the names of the railwaymen which worked the engine during its tour. With just five exceptions, all seventy one of the Royal Scot class were named for British military regiments; the Royal Scot(s) was the oldest infantry regiment of the British Army, 1633 – 2006. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

St_Blazey__5__turntable_and_46100_30_7_2017.jpg (130703 bytes)

St.Blazey_(5)_turntable_and_46100_30.7.2017: Britain’s heritage steam movement is big business with numerous steam hauled, main line trains running virtually every week, up and down the country. A number of those services bring train loads of passengers into Cornwall to enjoy the county’s beautiful scenery and resorts. However, such traffic will become virtually impossible if the turntable at St. Blazey is allowed to fade and die, making scenes like this, but a memory. No. 46100 “Royal Scot” moves on to the turntable, watched and many times photographed by the enthusiastic general public. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

UK_Edale_6115_10_1978.jpg (54857 bytes)

UK – Ex-LMS Royal Scot 3-cylinder 4-6-0 6115 Scots Guardsman makes one of its very few forays onto the mainline on a running-in turn following repairs; note that the tender has not yet been repainted after the long overhaul. Sadly the repairs were not good enough and after just two trips with enthusiasts' special trains from Dinting to York, this locomotive was withdrawn from service and has not run since. October 1978.
