Ongoing construction work for the new railfreight terminal at Raiths Farm, just
north of Dyce, some 10 km north east of Aberdeen. The passing loop at Dyce
station (behind the photographer) is being extended by about 1 km and new signals
will be required. The sleepers set out ready to take the new track are steel --
extremely unusual in British practice where wood or concrete are preferred.

St.Blazey_(3)_old_locomotive_shed_30.7.2017: the former roundhouse at St.Blazey was built by the Cornwall Mineral Railway in 1874 and served until closure to steam locomotives in 1962, with use by diesel locomotives continuing until final closure in 1987. The shed’s structure is almost unique in Britain, so it has gained British Heritage status with a Grade II Listing, which means it must be preserved for future generations and no alterations may be made to the building without the express permission of the Listing authority. Today the individual building segments are maintained by a private company and rented to small commercial firms. The 65 foot (20m) turntable is maintained by DB Schenker Rail (UK) (DBS), as part of the St.Blazey depot, but is listed in the British Heritage register as “At Risk,” so it can only be hoped that DBS, or more likely, another concerned body, will ensure the turntable’s “Listing” and thereby, preservation for the future. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |
St.Blazey_(4)_turntable_30.7.2017: the St.Blazey turntable was installed in 1951 by the firm of Cowans Sheldon, of Carlisle. It is of the ‘Mundt’ type, i.e. with carrying wheels at each end, making it unnecessary to balance locomotives being turned. Originally it was fitted for operating under vacuum power, using vacuum provided by the locomotive being turned, with reserve vacuum being stored in the two large tanks along the turntable’s edge. Today the vacuum tractor unit is not operable, so locomotives are turned by hand, by means of a geared winding mechanism. This picture shows a close-up of the turntable controls, still complete with the Cowans Sheldon builder’s plate.. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com |

When out taking pictures of trains you do not anticipate coming across a 'stuffed' dog
on a platform but we did just that at Slough. Not only that he dates right back to the
1890's which must surely make him the oldest and strangest exhibit you are ever likely
to see on a British railway station. Pictured December 2004.

UK Railway Station, Surbiton, Surrey. The London and South Western Railway first reached Surbiton in 1838 and the line was opened through to Basingstoke in 1839. The LSWR station at Surbiton was re-sited in 1845. The present station was reconstructed by the Southern Railway in 1938 in a modern transport image consistent with the successful "Southern Electric" and Cunarder image.
