The rails approaching the headwall of bay platforms at York station are embossed with this zig-zag pattern as a safety measure. They causes a lot of noise and vibration, so there can be no doubt that the end of the line is approaching. It is possible they assist breaking by providing extra friction, but I don't know.

It is clear that there used to be a second platform adjacent to this one, but it was removed before the current platform numbering scheme was implemented.

Platforms 9 to 11 at York station. The train is TransPennine Express operated Class 158 DMU 158799 with a service to (I think) Manchester Picadilly. The footbridge was extended from platform 11 over the track in early 2004 to provide a more direct access route to the adjacent National Railway Museum in advance of that years bicentennial "Rail200" railfest.
