Taunton station is partially built on a bridge over Kingston Road, which this sign identifies as being 163 miles 13 chains (262.58km) from the origin (presumably London Paddington) via the mainline (rather than via Bristol).

Taunton station is partially built on a bridge over Kingston Road, this photograph from the north shows the prominent hight warning signs deployed - the centre of the bridge, beneath the tracks, is lower than the edges that support the platforms, hence the Low Bridge signs are below the beam at the edge.

Taunton station is partially built on a bridge over Kingston Road, this photograph from the south shows that similar warning signs to the north (see previous photo) are employed - but here the LOW sign has fallen off. Also, from being in the sun, the paintwork is in a much poorer state.

At the west end of the south side of Taunton station, is bay platform 1 that is all-but disused. Originally as can be seen in this photograph it had platform faces on both sides of the track but the right hand (south) side is now wholly disused. Also disused is another bay platform on the other side of the platform block and sidings beyond that. I suspect these saw regular use before the closure of the Minehead and Barnstaple branch lines.

Two disused bay platfomrs at the western and of the north side of Taunton station have been partially filled in at some point. The decaying remains of the buffer stops can be seen in this photograph.

Looking east from the western end of platform 2 at Taunton station. Platform 1 is a bay platform on the extreme right of shot, platforms 3 and 4 in the middle were disused for many years before being reopened recently. Moving further left is platform 5, the northern most of the through lines. Behind the eastern end of platform 5 is platform 6, a bay platform for northbound services. Two bay platforms behind the western end of platform 5, the second face of platform 1 and a bay platform behind that are all now disused.

The entrance to the booking office and platforms on the northern side of Taunton station. This cramped and particularly unatractive 1960s building is due to receive "a complete redesign" as part of the franchise agreement by First Group for the new Greater Western franchise due to start in April. In my opinion the best thing to do would be knock it down and start again.

Platform 1 at Taunton stationm, on the left of this image, is now almost compeltely disused. The left hand platform face and the other platform adjacent to it and the sidings beyond are completely disused, but probably saw much use before the closure of the Minehead and Barnstaple branch lines. Platform 2 on the right of the image is still in active service for southbound through trains and some terminating services from the north. The centre platforms on the extreme right were also disused until the past couple of years.

Platform 5 at Taunton station is on the left of this photograph, while the bay platform on the right is disuesed. Platforms 2-5 at Taunton station. Platform 2, from where the phtograph is taken, is used for southbound through services and some terminating services from the north. Platforms 3 and 4 in the centre, disused for many years, are used mostly in the peaks for stopping through services and/or terminating services. Trains that pass through the station without stopping also generally use those platforms. On the left of the photograph platform 5 is currently hosting a northbound First Great Western HST service to London Paddington - typical of the trains that normally call there.

Looking up the stairs to platforms 3 and 4 from the subway at Taunton station. The decorative copper lamp shades are the only attractive feature in this otherwise utilitarian subway. Rather than install a lift to the platforms for disabled access, the cheaper option of a stair lift has been chosen here - the only station I've been to that has done this. Platforms 1/2 and 5/6 are both accessible via lift or stairs.

The blank wall opposite the stairs to platfomrs 3 and 4 in the subway at Taunton station. The alcove and copper light covers that match those at the foot of the other stair cases suggests to me that this was an alternative access to the platforms.
