The northbound platform at Rannoch Station in central Scotland, from here you can catch a train to Fort William. An exhibition on railways in the Highlands of Scotland wass due to open in the station building about a fortnight after my visit - although the leaflet we picked up about it didn't say this! Truly in the middle of almost nowhere, Rannoch station is at the end of a five-mile dead-end road and 16 miles distant from the large (for the area) village of Kinloch Rannoch at the far end of Loch Rannoch (Map).

A poster at the bus stop outside Rannoch Station in central Scotland highlights some of the different trains that have been seen at the station. Clockwise from top left: Two LNER steam engines; a diesel freight locomotive, possibly a Class 37; An EWS Class 37, possibly 37425 or 37428, hauling what is probably a London - Fort William sleeper train; and Regional Railways livieried Class 156 DMU 156442 with a service to Mallaig.

A general view of Rannoch Station in central Scotland taken from the footbridge. From the righthand platform you can here you can catch a northbound service to Fort William and thence to Mallaig. The southbound platform on the left, currently undergoing some engineering work, offers services to Crianlarich, Glasgow and the South.
