A merged view of platforms 1 and 2 at Liverpool Central station are for Northern Line services. Class 507 or 508 EMUs are curently at both platforms. As a significant number of services terminate at this station, both platforms are fully signalled for bidirectional use, meaning it is not possible to infer a destination based on which platform a train calls at.

Platform 1 at Liverpool Central station. The unused space to the right of the track suggests that there was perhaps a siding or run-around loop here in the past.

The Northern Line tunnel to the south of platform 1 at Liverpool Central station. I don't know what the CSR 39 sign is referring to, but my guess is that it is related to the Cab Secure Radio system.

The northern side of Liverpool Lime Street station is home to platforms 1 to 6. In this shot from the eastern end of platform 6 three different classes of multiple unit are present. From left to right, Central Trains Class 350 EMU 350129 is the newest; in the centre is Northern Rail Class 142 railbus DMU 142004 in the livery of first-generation private operator North West Trains. Rightmost is Class 156 DMU 156461 showing off the colours of its present operator Northern Rail.

The underground Wirral Line platform at Liverpool Lime Street railway station. In contrast to the above ground mainline station, which is electrified at 25kv using overhead wires, the suburban Merseyrail trains that call here take their power from a 750v third rail.
There is only one platform for the Wirral Line at Lime Street station as it is located on a single-track loop constructed in the 1970s to connect the station, along with Moorfields and Liverpool Central stations, to James Street station.

The next train information display on the Wirral Line platform at Liverpool Lime Street station. I am not aware of any other operator that routinely displays the length of the train in this manner.

The space between platforms 7 and 8 at Liverpool Lime Street railway station is sufficiently wide that it gives the impression of having previously been at least two more platforms and possibly one or more non-platform tracks as well.

Platforms 7 and 8 at Liverpool Lime Street railway station. The space between the platforms is so large that there were almost certainly at least two more platforms and possibly one or more non-platform tracks between them.

The map of the Merseyrail network. This photograph was taken at Liverpool Central station, the southern interchange with between the green (Wirral Line) and blue (Northern Line) lines. Wirral Line trains run clockwise around the single track loop from James Street station, calling at Moorfields, Liverpool Lime Street and Liverpool Central.
