HSTs do not normally call at Bridgwater, but this hand painted stopping mark on the northbound platform indicates that they do on occasion.

The platform shelters at Bridgwater station in Somerset, photographed from platform 2. Trains calling at platform 1 are southbound services, most terminate at Taunton but some do continue to Exeter and Plymouth. Northbound services call at platform 2 - most are Taunton to Cardiff Central via Weston-super-Mare services, but there is at least one direct train to London Paddington in the mornings.

The southern end of platform 2 at at Bridgwater station in somerset, the present platform is served by northbound trains towards Weston-super-Mare, Bristol and Cardiff/London. On the right is what appears to be a disused south-facing bay platform.

Nuclear waste from Hinkley Point power station on the Somerset coast is transported to Bridgwater by road, and then by rail to Sellafield in Cumbria. This fixed gantry crane in the yard at Bridgwater station is used to transfer the 50+ tonne nuclear waste flasks from lorries to trains.

A merged view of the main building at Bridgwater station in Somerset. Although today this is a fairly quiet station with trains just hourly off-peak, at its peak it was thronged with holiday makers.

A merged view of Bridgwater station in Somerset, photographed looking accross from platform 1 to the junction at the northern end of platform 2 which means the latter is significantly shorter than the southbound platform. The junction gives the only access to the sidings known variously as "Bridgwater railhead" and "Eastover sidings", that are the location where nuclear waste flasks from Hinkley Point power station are transfered from road to rail on their journey to Sellafield in Cumbria.

A merged view of a north-facing siding on the west side of Bridgwater station in Somerset. From the look of the track it appears this sees occasional use. This photograph was taken from platform 2, the northbound platform.

A north-facing siding on the west side of Bridgwater station in Somerset. From the look of the track it appears this sees occasional use. This photograph was taken from the station car park. To exit from the siding a train must shunt out into the yeard infront of the blue building in the background before reversing into the northbound platform of the station (the other side of the fence on the right).

The northern end of platform 1 at Bridgwater station in Somerset, this platform is served by southbound trains towards Taunton. On the left are Eastover sidings (also known as Bridgwater railhead) where nuclear flasks are transfered from road to rail on their journey from Hinkley Point power station to Sellafield in Cumbria. It appears that the station sign and lamp post are located on a filled-in former north-facing bay platform.

The northern end of platform 1 at Bridgwater station in Somerset, this platform is served by southbound trains towards Taunton. The layout of this platform suggests there was previously one or more north-facing bay platforms and/or sidings on this side of the station.

The near bridge is a footbridge connecting streets either side of the station, but with access to the station not far from either end. The far bridge is the original station footbridge connecting the two platforms.

A merged view of Bridgwater station in Somerset, viewed looking south from the northern end of platform 1 (the southbound platform). Platform 2 is significantly shorter due to the junction that gives access to the Eastover sidings (aka Bridgwater railhead) where nuclear waste flasks are transferred from road to rail en route from Hinkley Point power station to Sellafield in Cumbria.

Looking south from the road bridge south of Bridgwater station in Somerset. The two left tracks are part of the Great Western mainline continues south from here towards Taunton, where it meets the West of England Main Line, and then on to Exeter (where the South West Main Line meets), Plymouth and Penzance. The line on the right appears to be a disued loop for northbound trains, it is partly overgrown and no longer connected to the main line at the southern end. The line would also have given access to and from a south-facing bay platform adjacent to the present northbound platform at the station, with a crossover to the southbound line at the start of the curve in the distance.

Eastover sidings, at the far (north) end of the station only have a connection to the northbound (right in this view) line. The points here are the first place southbound services can access the southbound track. Underneath the vegetation at the bottom of this photograph is a short stretch of (now disconnected) line giving access to a now disused south-facing bay platform at the station, adjacent to the present northbound track, the points would also presumably have been traversed by trains departing from this platform to access the southbound line.

Looking south from the footbridge over the southern end of Bridgwater station in Somerset. The bridge connects the streets adajcent to the station on either side of the line rather than the platforms directly, although access to both platforms is not far from either end. The station currently consists of just two operational platforms, but there was clearly a south-facing bay on the northbound (right) side, and possibly also on the southbound side as well. The points under the bridge are not currently operational, but previously would have served as the exit from a line, now mostly overgrown and disconnected at the far end, that formed both a goods loop and access to/from the north-side bay platform.
