Whipsnade_Zoo_2ft-6in_No.2. UK heritage steam in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1970 Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, opened a 2-mile (3.2km) 2ft-6in (762mm) railway circuit which passes through various wildlife paddocks. In May 1974, 0-4-2T No.2 Excelsior (Kerr Stuart 1049/1908) stands at Whipsnade Central station with a passenger train. The railway, now known as the Great Whipsnade Railway, or even the Jumbo Express, still operates with all trains steam-hauled whenever possible. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

Whipsnade_Zoo_engine_shed_5.1974. UK heritage steam in the 1960s and 1970s. Whipsnade Zoo Railway’s engine shed in May 1974. Inside were 2ft-6in gauge 0-6-2T Nos. 3 Conqueror and 4 Superior (Bagnall 2192/1922 and Kerr Stuart 4034/1920, respectively), while outside was No.1 Chevalier (Manning Wardle 1877/1915). roger.griffiths@hotmail.com
