These two narrow gauge locos...the steamer from 1916 and the diesel from 1954...are seen here
at a relatively new attraction the 'Royal Gunpowder Mills' Waltham Abbey Essex. Both had worked
previously on the Royal Arsenal Railway Woolwich and it is hoped that they will do so again
at this new appropriate sight.

No.1748 'Woolwich' constructed in 1916 was one of 16 'Charlton' Class 18 inch gauge locos and
worked at the Royal Arsenal Railway Woolwich in S.E. London until 1956. Acquired by the
Bicton Woodlands Railway in Devon in 1962 she then operated for a further 38 years before moving to
her current location in the year 2000 where plans are to return the loco to traffic.

Hunslet built in 1954 'Carnegie' is descibed as a 'double bogey diesel' and is
the only one of its kind remaining. Following a relatively short career on the
narrow gauge Royal Arsenal Railway Woolwich, where she was the last locomotive to arrive,
the loco then joined the Bicton Woodlands Railway in Devon in 1966 and remained there until
moving to Essex in 2000. Plans are for the loco to be returned to traffic.

A wagon based on a design used at the site and possibly used for the transportation of explosives.

A small narrow gauge railway has been constructed to illustrated the transportation
of explosives. It is not however an exact replica of the actual railway on site...of which only track
and the odd buffer stop can still be seen.

In one of the old buildings there were these narrow gauge wagons. We are not sure whether
they are similar to those used at the Gunpowder Mill though...will check the next time we visit!

When is a 'steam' loco not a steam loco...when it is this one apparently!
The loco has only the outline of a steam loco and was always diesel powered. This
narrow gauge loco is in fact a Ruston and Hornsby 13DL and the plan
is to return to its original condition...see following note.
