National Railway Museum - UK From the balcony you have a great view of the workshop of the NRM. Currently they are - amongst others - bringing steam locomotive 3440 "City of Truro" back to working order. This locomotive visited The Netherlands in 1989 during the celebrations for 150 years of railways in the country. York, 11/11/2003 Digital photo by Marco van Uden |

30 June 2001, National Railway Museum, York, England, UK This end car of a Japanese Shinkansen will go on full display on July 14th this year. However, it is already in place, but still wrapped, maybe to heighten the anticipationof the visitor. I also overheard that the museum fees will be scrapped until further notice later this year, but my source did not tell me when this is going to happen.

30 June 2001, National Railway Museum, York, England, UK The APT test train stabled on a museum siding. This was the attempt of British Rail of introducing a tilting train about a quarter of a century ago. These Advanced Passenger Trains only ran very few scheduled diagrams with passengers before being withdrawn from service. There were problems as the pre-computer-era tilting system could go into an error state leaving a coach fully tilted, and in the end BR feared the bad press of a train service prone to malfunctioning. Actually only three out of the four car diesel unit are stored here, as one car has been taken indoors into the museum magazine.

Not too long ago you could travel inside the blue CIWWL sleeping cars. With night trains slowly disappearing in some countries, it's nice to feel again the image of luxury travel around Europe.

Queen Victoria wasn't too keen on trains speeding too much, but still she travelled in luxurious conditions, in padded walls and comfortable thick carpets on the floor. Here we see her, dressed in her caracteristhic black clothes. Reproduction of life in a Royal train at the station hall of the museum.
