A view of the hopefully soon to be open Epping Ongar Railway. No ordinary preserved railway this
as it was until September 1994 part of London Underground...the Epping to Ongar Branch
on the Central Line. Tube trains will not feature to our knowledge but initially a DMU
will operate services. Maybe steam will also make a return to the line in the not too distant
future...we hope so. Picture taken at Ongar on May 16th 2004.

A class 117 DMU in the Epping Ongar Railway's colours sits in the platform
at Ongar on the 16th May 2004. Hopefully it will soon be carrying passengers again.

This Ruston 88 diesel dating from 1965 is the working one of the two and was running
on the day we visited Ongar. This is the soon to open Epping Ongar Railway on the 16th May 2004.

Although this Ruston 88 on the Epping Ongar Railway is non-operational being used to
provide spares for the green 88, it has been painted into the railway's colours and
consequently looks quite smart. Pictured at Ongar on the 16th May 2004.

October 10th 2004 was a very special day for the Epping Ongar Railway as it
opened to the public for the first time...and we were there at Ongar to see
this historic event!

Its 11.00am on the 10th October 2004 and the FIRST public train on the Epping Ongar Railway departs in a
suitable 'cloud of clag' from the class 117 DMU which is sporting the Railway's livery.

Almost 10 years to the day since the last Central Line Tube departed from
Ongar the line is once again running trains. Its October 10th 2004 and the
very FIRST public service is now off thanks to the efforts of the Epping Ongar Railway.

The FIRST service train on the Epping Ongar Railway successfully makes it
back to Ongar from North Weald on the 10th October 2004 so creating a little
local railway history.

For a line that is relatively close to London it has a delightfully rural
setting as this view taken between Ongar and North Weald shows. We
are on the Epping Ongar Railway enjoying our run on only the second train they
operated in public service. The date is Sunday 10th October 2004.

A line to nowhere...well not quite! This is looking south towards Epping from North Weald and has
now, since the re-opening of the line to the public on October 10th 2004, been included in the regular Sunday
runs made by the Epping Ongar Railway...at least as far as Coopersale that is where the DMU now reverses.
Imagine a Tube train running down this line which they did until 1994...we did it just the once.

The inside of the class 117 DMU now owned and operated by the Epping Ongar Railway.
For a unit that is probably around 45 years old it appears to be internally
in very good condition. Pictured on the occasion of the lines re-opening on the
10th October 2004.

Not surprisingly this sign...'The Railway Hotel'... was pictured near a railway station. In this case it was
Faversham Kent in the Summer of 2004.

This we understand is a Mikado 2-8-2 Finnish steam loco No.1060 that is now on the Epping Ongar Railway
at Ongar in the U.K. It was pictured in the sun on May 16th 2004.

This Finnish loco No.1060 is now in the U.K. but how? This and 3 other Finnish lococs plus two coaches
that are now to be found at Ongar on the soon to be opened Epping Ongar Railway, were originally
bought over to form an attraction at a holiday camp/theme park but this never happened.
Instead they are now on static display on what was 10 years ago part of London Underground's
Central Line.

We think this Finnish loco might be an Hr1 having a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement
but we are not entirely sure. What we do know is that it was pictured on the
on the Epping Ongar Railway at Ongar on the 16th May 2004.
