Angel station on London Underground's Northern Line has the longest escalators in western Europe - 60m (197ft) long, with 318 steps and a vertical rise of 27.4m (90ft). gb-lu-Angel-southbound.jpg (160408 bytes)

Angel station on London Underground's Northern Line has an unusually wide southbound platform. The reason for this, according to Wikipedia's article is that it was originally built with a single island platform serving both lines, however this was too narrow for the number of people using it. In 1992 a new tunnel was excavated for the northbound platform and the southbound platform was extended to occupy the space formerly occupied by the northound tracks.
