London Underground Steam Locomotive. 0-6-0PT L89 was a 1929 built ex-GWR 5775 class loco sold to London Transport in 1963 for use on work trains when the track power was shut off. It was sold in 1970 and is preserved on the Worth Valley Railway.

SATURDAY 11th MARCH 2006 1645. This is the scene looking down at Chigwell Station on London
Underground's Central Line as the work of track re-laying is taking place. A ballast train top-n-tailed by
battery locos sits in the westbound platform whilst the eastbound track has been removed.

SATURDAY 11th MARCH 2006 1645. Viewed from a bridge near Chigwell Station on London
Underground's Central Line and looking east in the direction of Grange Hill, work is going on
replacing the track with two trains and four battery locos involved.

SUNDAY MARCH 12th 2006. Roding Valley is one stop down from Chigwell on London Underground's Central Line where
track replacement is taking place which accounts for the ballast train with battery loco L45 on the front.
Access to the bridge in the picture is required not just by passengers but also by the general public and
as a result the station is conveniently always open.

SUNDAY MARCH 12th 2006. Battery Loco L48 is top-n-tailing with out of sight L45 on a ballast train whilst L54 is seen further
down the line with its own small rake of wagons at Roding Valley on London Underground's Central Line.

Chigwell where track re-laying work is taking place on London Underground's Central Line.

SUNDAY MARCH 12th 2006. The view from the bridge at Roding Valley looking west where L45 waits on its ballast train. The line in the background is
the one to Epping, the branch coming off soon after leaving Woodford where sidings are regularly used for engineering trains.

SUNDAY MARCH 12th 2006 1200. This is now the view looking down on Chigwell Station where it can be
seen the new eastbound track has during the night been put in place. The station which was opened in
1903 as part of the Great Eastern Railway's Woodford to Ilford line retains its steam train heritage.

SUNDAY MARCH 12th 2006 1200. This is the view from Chigwell looking east in the direction of Hainault. Again much activity
has taken place since we were last here and as a result all four rails of the eastbound track have now been relayed.
Our next view of this Central Line possession is from the blue pedestrian bridge visible in the background.

SUNDAY MARCH 12th 2006 1215. Having arrived at the foot bridge it is totally covered by wire fencing but you can
fortunately just take pictures through the gaps! This view enables us to look back down the line where we can see under
the bridge we were previously taking pictures from, a platform at Chigwell Station and under yet another bridge
where the booking hall stands. One train has moved off since but three others and four locos can still be seen along
with many trackside workers in their high visibility coats.

A close up look a Battery Loco L18 which has been used on engineering work on the Central Line near
Chigwell over the weekend of March 11th and 12th 2006. Some examples of these locos were built by
British Rail Engineering in the mid 1970s but the basic design goes back much further... at least to
the 1950s and quite possible beyond that. This loco is yellow whilst others are blue but we are
not aware this means there are any difference between the two.

Returning from a day out videoing trains 'James' could not resist getting off at Woodford and taking this atmospheric
night shot of LT Battery locos on their ballast trains alongside the station. They would have been used on
the branch to Hainault where track relaying has been continuing over the weekend. This picture was taken on Monday 20th March 2006 and they will continue their journey west after the system closes to the public for the night.

Battery locmotives are used for hauling engineers' trains, and can draw power from the electrified rails like a normal tube train, or run on batteries when the power is switched off.

City & South London Railway locomotive number 13, dating from 1890, preserved at London's Transport Museum Depot. The associated information reads:
The City & South London Railway, which opened in 1890, was London's first deep level Tube and the first underground electric railway in the world. This locomotive is very important both as part of the prototype Tube network and because it dates from the birth of the electric traction industry.

HISTORY. This splendid Metropolitan Line Electric loco dating from 1921 has been returned to traffic. No 12 named 'Sarah Siddons'
after a British actress, is seen on the back of a special at Chorleywood on the very line she served for so many years.
Pictured on the 10th June 2007.

HISTORY. Recently restored to traffic Metropolitan Vickers built loco 'Sarah Siddons' dating from 1921 is seen alongside the A60
stock which finally ended these loco's passenger workings on London Undeground's Metropolitan line in 1961. No 12 however was
to continue in service for many years to come in an engineering capacity and later actually made it onto the Southern Region on a charter! The
date of this picture was the 5th June 2007 at Rickmansworth when 'Sarah' was doing some proving runs prior to a forthcoming special.
