One of the emergency alarms located adjacent to the external doors on the mockup of the London Underground 2009 stock that will replace the existing 1967 stock on the Victoria Line. When the alarm button is pushed an alarm sounds in the driver's cab and the "Driver Aware" indication is given to the passenger. Once the driver has acknowledged the alarm the "Speak to Driver" indication is given so the passenger can communicate the nature of the emergency to the driver who can take the apropriate action.

The Rail Vehicle Access Regulations (RVAR) state that warnings and information should be given both visually and audibly, as part of this the new stock has lights by the door that iluminate when the doors are opening or closing.

The mockup of the London Underground 2009 stock, which will replace the existing 1967 stock on the Victoria Line, was open to public viewing in a marquee in Euston Square Gardens for a couple of weeks in early August. In one of the many new features for improved accessiblity are these lights in the doorway that illuminate the edge of the doorway to overcome any gloom in the station. Because the maquee was well lit I suspect the full effectiveness of these is not well shown here.

A view loowing along the length of the carriage from the inside, the train carriage is wider than other tube stock to take advantage of the slightly more generous loading guage of the Victoria Line.

As is normal in the space-restricted tube stock, some of the train equipment is located underneath the seats. This is the lock to access that equiptment, a very useful introduction on this stock is the yellow markers - when they lign up the seat is locked down, giving a quick indication to the train operator.

The tip-up seats along one wall in the centre of the carraige allow extra room for standing passengers, or space for a wheelchair, for which reason the passenger alarm is located at a lower level here. The backrests of the tip-up seats make them possibly the least comfortable seats of any British rolling stock!

My bag is on the seats to give some sort of indication of what they look like when down - the backrests are probably the least comfortable of any on British rolling stock.
